The Prince Arthur Cup Inter-Livery Golf May 2024. We entered a competitive team for this year’s 36 hole Inter-Livery Foursomes Golf Tournament at Walton Heath in Surrey. The Prince Arthur trophy dates from 1927 when it was first played at Walton Heath Golf Club to celebrate Queen Victoria’s grandson, Prince Arthur of Connaught, joining the Coachmakers’ Company. Our team consisted of first couple Liz Green and John Mawer and second couple Tony Jarvis and Adrian Keene. The start was delayed for 30 minutes by fog, but then starting on the New Course both our couples performed creditably to stand at a team score of -1 at lunchtime and well in contention in the hunt for the trophy. In the afternoon, the more difficult Old Course was tackled in warm sunshine, although thundery storm clouds could be seen. This longer course made things more difficult for John and Liz, with the ladies tee boxes not giving that much expected advantage, but Adrian and Tony managed to finish level, so that our final team score came in at -5 finishing a creditable eighth overall out of 39 teams, and thankfully, comfortably ahead of the Bakers! Adrian and Tony eventually finished at +1 overall for the day ending joint third out of 78 couples. The ultimate winners of the cup were the Pattenmakers Company on +1, six holes ahead of our team, with Lightmongers second on -1. The Knitters will have to continue in their quest in future years to claim the cup for the first time.
